Beachfront Railing

A client on the New Jersey Shore had desired to upgrade their terrace railings. The architect designed a custom railing with pickets at 45 degrees alternating every 5 feet. The architect reached out to us to verify the feasibility of his design. He also wanted to discuss the durability of our powder-coat finish.

During the discussion we explored the possibility of using round bars for the railing pickets. We were thinking of spacing them just under 4” to meet code. We proposed creating the pickets in 5/8” aircraft grade aluminum for rigidity and durability. For the posts we proposed 1 ½” X 1 ½” solid posts. We also utilized ¼” X 1” flat bar welded to the end of the railing panel. Then the railing post was machined out on the side to have the ¼” X 1” to sit inside and have all the railing posts be proportional as opposed to be scabbed unto the side of the railing posts.

The additional challenge was that both the second and third floor terraces had a 60 degree sharp return. This made for a difficult time anchoring the custom railing at this obtuse point. To counter this challenge we created custom stainless pieces to attach the custom railing posts.

For the custom railing finish we utilized an eco-friendly powder-coat finish that is durable and robust enough to withstand the harsh elements at the shore. Given the fact that this New Jersey home was directly overlooking the beach, this robust finish was necessary. It will now be able to provide years of safety and beauty to this New Jersey home.
