A roofing and siding contractor in southeastern PA was upgrading the entire facade of their home. As part of the upgrade, they wanted to add a custom Juliet balcony overlooking the backyard and pool area.

During the initial Juliet balcony design discussion, we proposed using aircraft-grade aluminum. Compared to a traditional wrought iron balcony, the aluminum offered comparable structural rigidity while reducing the weight by 50-60%. The non-corrosive alloy completely eliminated the risk of corrosion, and when powder-coated properly, it looked indistinguishable from an iron Juliet balcony.

The railing design was chosen to match the swimming pool fence, with pickets specified as ¾” solid square bars. The client opted for a more distinctive 6” post instead of the typical 1 ½” square railing post. We also added a contemporary dome-style post cap to align with their transitional design vision.

The Juliet balcony’s caprail featured a molded profile, while the railing design incorporated three horizontal rails with 1 ½” x ½” bar channels. The main structure of the Juliet balcony was built using 4” aircraft-grade aluminum channel. For the floor, we used ½” x 1 ½” flat bars with a ½” gap between them to provide traction and allow snow and water to pass through.

We applied a CIW-2604-A finish to the entire structure, starting with blasting it to a white metal surface, followed by a hot phosphate wash, a clean water rinse, and a sealer. After priming, we powder-coated it with a statuary bronze topcoat and baked the piece at 400 degrees to cure the eco-friendly coating.

Once finished, we hoisted the Juliet balcony into place and anchored it to the band board of the floor structure. We designed the railing to be structural, providing additional anchoring through vertical framing members of the house.

This roofing contractor in southeastern PA enhanced the architecture of the home’s back façade. This created a beautiful exterior alcove for sitting and enjoying the view of the backyard and pool. It now creates a relaxing space that generations will enjoy.

As the owner of an exclusive property, we were looking for custom ironworks replicated from England in the 1860s. The photo we had was sketchy, but these passionate craftsmen knew their business, knew the details of this ancient craft and provided tips on adding authenticity. They provided excellent communication throughout the creativity and design process, then with superb, detailed craftsmanship, they created and installed an exceptional piece of ironwork that is rich in detail, authentic, yet is engineered to withstand use for decades, utilizing 100% recycled material and an eco-friendly durable finish.

We had a railing, designed, created, and installed by Compass Ironworks. Amos and Aaron were extremely professional. They kept us informed of how things were progressing. We even visited the shop when the railing was almost complete. We HIGHLY recommend Compass Ironworks! We have had several people knock on our door to ask about who made our beautiful railing. Thank you for your hard work!

We had a rather unusual design for our front railings, but the folks at Compass Ironworks took it in stride, figured out how to make it and delivered EXACTLY what we were hoping for — all at a reasonable price. Plus they’re just plain nice to deal with.
