A client in the Philadelphia area was building a new luxury home. They wanted a custom modern railing to accentuate the interior décor of the new build. In the initial budget discussion, the clients shared a design inspo photo. It just so happened that we were completing a very similar project for another client at the time. This project had been created with a modern and minimalist look by using ½” round pickets. We drilled them directly into the floor and the treads. The caprail was created by a 2” X 1” rectilinear profile to keep with the most current design trends.

Measuring the area precisely was the first step we took to making the client’s modern dream rail come to life. The clients met with an interior designer and asked if we could accommodate some changes to design. They wanted to explore the idea of doing a bronze caprail in a contemporary half oval style instead. They also were looking at adding a swoop at the end to give it a modern flare with no traditional post at the ends.

We pursued the bronze caprail in the modern half oval profile, but unfortunately budget constraints came into play. We couldn’t leave the client with this disappointment, so we started to think outside the box to help. Thankfully, we had traditional profile bronze on the rack left over from a previous project, so were able to utilize that at a lower cost. The client selected the cost-saving traditional profile bronze caprail. This allowed them to have the luxurious look of bronze and the dramatic swoop at the bottom to get the modern flare look they were going for.

Then, we designed the entire iron railing project in CAD for the client’s approval. The clients and their interior designer reviewed the drawings in both plain view and elevated view to get a better understanding of how it would look in their space. They inquired about adding a ball unto the pickets at strategic places for a dramatic visual impact. They also desired the railing post to be minimized for an even more modern railing design. We downsized the post size to 1”, added round balls to some pickets and sent it back to the client to review.

Elated with the upgrades, the client signed off on the new design. So, we got to work creating this elite modern railing. We made sure to include all the upgrades to the original design. Then we powder-coated the railing sections. Next, we highlighted the balls with some gold to add dimension. This railing project overall is a superb design statement this Philadelphia home now boasts for all to enjoy!

As the owner of an exclusive property, we were looking for custom ironworks replicated from England in the 1860s. The photo we had was sketchy, but these passionate craftsmen knew their business, knew the details of this ancient craft and provided tips on adding authenticity. They provided excellent communication throughout the creativity and design process, then with superb, detailed craftsmanship, they created and installed an exceptional piece of ironwork that is rich in detail, authentic, yet is engineered to withstand use for decades, utilizing 100% recycled material and an eco-friendly durable finish.

We had a railing, designed, created, and installed by Compass Ironworks. Amos and Aaron were extremely professional. They kept us informed of how things were progressing. We even visited the shop when the railing was almost complete. We HIGHLY recommend Compass Ironworks! We have had several people knock on our door to ask about who made our beautiful railing. Thank you for your hard work!

We had a rather unusual design for our front railings, but the folks at Compass Ironworks took it in stride, figured out how to make it and delivered EXACTLY what we were hoping for — all at a reasonable price. Plus they’re just plain nice to deal with.
