A custom home builder in the Philadelphia area was creating a custom gated entrance for a property. The architect and client were in dialogue to create the grand driveway gate design and wanted insights on design elements that aligned with their vision.

The design team reached out to us to set up a design meeting to review the driveway gate design. We were able to provide samples of custom castings for driveway gates that we had done in the past. This innovative approach of flipping every other design casting also provided a “collar on collar” detail at a cost effective approach. And by proposing a ½” bar with a 45 degree termination further enhanced the driveway gate design.

The bottom of the driveway gate design was a Florentine medallion with plates directly above it, which had a Florentine medallion cut out in the center. The concept behind a solid plate was to hide the heavy duty gate operator arm. Above the solid plates was a bow upward facing and above that a downward facing arched frieze that was referenced above. The driveway gate frame was 2” X 1” horizontal channel. The vertical pickets were 1” square solid and at both ends of the driveway gate was a column of hand forged scrolls.

Then to make this set of driveway gates grand, the design team wanted add some detail. This included an ivy vine that “grows” up from the side and flows out over the top. We forged these vines from solid aluminum round bar. Also, we hand-forged the ivy leaver from aluminum plate.

We provided our own Million Dollar Hinges. That is a heavy-duty driveway gate hinge that we developed to provide minimal maintenance for our clients.

For this exceptional driveway gate project, the client also wanted a pedestrian gate entrance. For the gate latch, they desired a sliding bolt with a custom forged handle.

This Philadelphia property now portrays a grand driveway gate and pedestrian entrance that will last for generations to come.

As the owner of an exclusive property, we were looking for custom ironworks replicated from England in the 1860s. The photo we had was sketchy, but these passionate craftsmen knew their business, knew the details of this ancient craft and provided tips on adding authenticity. They provided excellent communication throughout the creativity and design process, then with superb, detailed craftsmanship, they created and installed an exceptional piece of ironwork that is rich in detail, authentic, yet is engineered to withstand use for decades, utilizing 100% recycled material and an eco-friendly durable finish.

We had a railing, designed, created, and installed by Compass Ironworks. Amos and Aaron were extremely professional. They kept us informed of how things were progressing. We even visited the shop when the railing was almost complete. We HIGHLY recommend Compass Ironworks! We have had several people knock on our door to ask about who made our beautiful railing. Thank you for your hard work!

We are so pleased with our custom deck railing created by Compass Ironworks. The design and finish are perfect, just what we envisioned. It was a pleasure working with Compass Ironworks, a company that takes pride in their work.

We had a rather unusual design for our front railings, but the folks at Compass Ironworks took it in stride, figured out how to make it and delivered EXACTLY what we were hoping for — all at a reasonable price. Plus they’re just plain nice to deal with.
